Festivals - What Are They All About?

In virtually every society, festivals are held on an almost daily basis. These festivals range in scope from one of the largest like the Oktoberfest, Germany’s smorgasbord of great beer and great food, to the smallest such as the community festival honouring an obscure saint, via the numerous music festivals that take place every year around the globe. In the largest festivals, you can be sure to run out of beds to sleep in the hotels because of the sheer number of revellers checking in. Make sure to book your accommodation in advance in order to secure a good night’s sleep in modern beds for maximum comfort. If hotels are full try the ‘couchsurfing’ type websites and book your bed online.

What is a festival? It is simply an event staged by the local community – or any other group of organizers, for that matter – which celebrates or commemorates a certain unique event or person or place that the community holds dear.

In short, it is a celebration of life itself – or at least, part of life even when it means celebrating intimate matters that happen on a bed. Think of Berlin’s Love Parade and UK’s famous Glastonbury Music Festival.

There are also other festivals not necessarily involving music, camping and the like. Religious festivals are made in honour of gods, saints and deities that the community worships; cultural festivals celebrate the unique culture of the locality; and music festivals are in celebration of the different genres of music.

Each festival serves specific functions, meet specific needs, and address specific issues where the community is concerned. Keep in mind that when we speak of community, we are referring not only to a geographical area but to a group of people with a deep sense of belongingness such as in a religion or nation.
